Engineering a Better Fidget Toy

Updated: Apr 1, 2019

INTRODUCTION

At first we started with practicing how to make a fidget spinner on ( OnShape) we had a step by step instruction page to build a circular fidget spinner. And after we finished with the practice fidget spinner we built a fidget spinner of our choice.

Why do people fidget?

The reason why people fidget is to help relieve stress or for fun and many other people use it for distractions as well as for result of nervousness, frustration, agitation, ADHD and excitement.

What are alternatives to fidget spinners?

They are plenty of alternatives to fidget spinners and some of the alternatives I found were Thinking Putty ( opens brain for creativity while keeping hands busy double win ).

Cuber Speed Rainbow Ball Fidget Toy ( This fidget ball is somewhat of a rubix cube-fidget toy hybrid that will keep you occupied and relaxed.)

What Different Fidget Toys Exist?

Spinner Ring ( Made of titanium, ring has 12 letters engraved and it can spell 15 meaningful words to express love).

Grip Strength Trainer ( Promotes strength, mobility and stress relief).

3 in 1 Rattle Pen Spinner ( Helps relieve stress, Helps get work get done).

PROBLEM STATEMENT

What was the problem definition?

The problem was that we tried 3D Printing different sizes of fidget spinners to figure out what size fit a bearing. And after a couple two tries I figured the first try was to thin and the second try the size of the circle was way to small so I re did it for the third time. The thing that I am trying to accomplish is to make sure the bearing fits the fidget spinner so we have to makes sure the fidget spinner is a certain size so the barring fits the fidget spinner.

ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS

Firsty, we started off the practice fidget spinners on, On Shape and after that we went straight into creating our own designed fidget spinner. And the first time the creation of the fidget spinner was drone it wasn't such a good model because it was too thin, and due to the thinness the fidget spinner fell apart. Secondly, I tried to re create it but the circle of the fidget spinner was way too small and the barring didn't manage to fit. Thirdly, I re did the fidget spinner and finally the circle was the same size as the barring.

TESTS

The failures that happened through the process is that on the first try the fidget spinner was way too thin. And the second try the circle from the fidget spinner was way too small for the barring to be able to fit in it. And some of the successes was that finally for the third time the fidget was perfect in thickness and the size of the circle was perfect for the barring. For the second try I changed how thick it was and for the last one I changed the measurement of the circle.
